The Real Story On Vitamin E
by

March 19th, 2005

A recent article was quoted in the news media in reference to vitamin E and other antioxidants.

JAMA. 2005 Mar 16;293(11):1387-90. Is There Any Hope For Vitamin E? was a recent article released into the general media that will no doubt raise confusion among the general public on their unsupervised uses of vitamin E and other antioxidants.

The article purports to state that large doses of vitamin E -- widely touted as an elixir of youth -- do not protect against heart attacks and cancer and might actually raise the risk of heart failure in people with diabetes or clogged arteries, a study found. Well, that may or may not be correct if it is used without adequate biochemistries and history from patients.

Does this study, published in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, represent just the latest to cast doubt on the safety and effectiveness of vitamin E supplements and other antioxidants? No. It only casts doubt on the blind, uneducated and solely opinion-based and random uses of any antioxidant outside of an empirical model. One would never have doubts about a properly fitted suit purchased at a clothing store; measurements are always taken from shoulder to shoulder, chest measurements, shoulder to wrist, waist measurements, crotch to cuff. Why? Because a suit is always properly fitted and never just taken and warn off the rack. Why do people do this? To see that the suit fits. Opinion evidence is never the standard in having a poroperly fitted suit. It is always measured. Standards and tools of measurement are always applied in an empirical model. It is the same with regard to fitting a person with antioxidant protection and nutritional support.

United Medical Network, Inc.'s standard of care is an evidence-based model of care based upon empirical study of the patient's history and chemistry ten notches above opinion evidence and speculation in the media. Like the fitting of a suit, a person is either within, above or below established reference ranges on his nutritional and customized profile. Applications of which vitamins, if any, and how much depends upon the hard evidence (empirical study result) of his own, unique, individual, clinical findings and not speculation, conjecture and surmise.

Mostly, Dr. Keys works as a Consulting PhD Doctor, usually from a distance, with and through a proper local anchor physician to order blood work. Advanced treatment protocols may develop from the advanced blood chemistries he requests. If you have no local doctor, Dr. Keys finds one through an affiliate physician network. His work is global, oftetimes involving patients from other countries as well as all over the continental USA. There are many tests and treatments to help people; Oftentimes, anchor physicians are not familiar or comfortable with them. Dr. Keys teaches and helps to direct individual patients AND their physicians with laboratory-work for these treatment options. This is measured work and clinical biochemistry. Opinion evidence standards are not employed here since this is a measured and laboratory-based or empirical study of the patient. Numbers are sought from the results of these tests that, usually, "...jump up and grab you..." that dictate what is needed and how much. Patient-advocacy is frequently involved to get advanced and necessary clinical biochemistries ordered and to help interpret them in filed reports..Chat room capabilities in voice or text, besides email, may be employed. This may include conference calls online. In a perfect world, if your physician knew everything, people like Dr. Keys would not exist. Physicians themselves are caught frequently in the traps of their own standards of care that may be very limited in many cases. Methods used by Dr. Keys are rational, scientific and disciplined.
